SCHOOL COUNCIL
If you have ever thought about joining the School Council, we have an online information session coming up that will provide you with valuable information! If you are interested in attending this virtual workshop please reach out to Kyra, your school council chair at jsm.gwskeneparentcouncil@gmail.com and she will send you the link.
School Council Purpose
May 13th 6:30pm-8:00pm
Through this workshop we will gain an understanding of the advisory role of school councils through a review of the legislation, exploring rights, responsibilities and choices including topics/areas open for discussion to help guide school council. We will also learn how to identify the work of school councils, how to frame a "personal issue" from a school council perspective and how to broach sensitive topics which are essential for new and returning members.
SPOTLIGHT
This week’s Spotlight was super exciting as we looked at how art can be a tool to express ourselves and to soothe our emotions! The learning intentions this week were: “I can use art to regulate my emotions” and “I can understand how art can show different emotions”. Students examined classic pieces of art and identified how it made them feel and then created beautiful, personalized pieces of art that represent how they feel different emotions!
UPCOMING GUEST SPEAKER
G.W. Skene and James Short Memorial School Council will be hosting a special guest speaker for parents on May 30th at 6:30 pm in the GWS Learning Commons. Jamie Pope is a psychologist who has been working with families in Calgary for 15 years. She is passionate about helping people to find the best ways to navigate change and know how to grow along with their families. Jamie knows that every family and child is different. There are no magic solutions to how hard it can be to grow up but there are common ways we can think about child development and support healthy growth. We are very excited for this event and hope our parent community will be able to join us!
